CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE HELEN COHEN OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARD

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science announces the opportunity for librarians and GSLIS students and faculty members, to nominate students, to receive the annual Helen Cohen Outstanding Student Award.

The Helen Cohen Outstanding Student Award is named in honor of a GSLIS graduate. Helen Cohen worked in public and special libraries, and, after her death, friends and family members contributed to a fund in her honor. For several years, the Friends of the Downers Grove Public Library administered this fund. In 1996, the Friends contributed the fund to Dominican University to establish this annual Award. The recipient of the Award will receive five hundred dollars, and will be publicly recognized.

Who may be a candidate?

GSLIS students who:
-exemplify overall excellence and leadership in the field of librarianship. 
-have completed at least six courses in the MLIS program, and who have a cumulative grade point average of B+ or 3.33 as of the end of the Fall Semester of 2007.
-are enrolled in the MLIS program in River Forest and four sites in Illinois,
-and who plan to complete the degree.  Transfer students are eligible. Students are nominated by librarians and/or GSLIS students and faculty members. Self-nominations will also be accepted.

You will be present at the May graduation ceremony, if selected to receive the Award. Winner will be present at the Beta Phi Mu ceremony, if selected to receive the Award and agree to be publicly recognized, if selected to receive the Award.

January 2008 Graduates and Self Nomination or nominating fellow are eligible. The committee will also accept nominations by adjunct.

How will students be nominated?
Written nominations must include the nominee’s name and a narrative how the nominee satisfies the award criteria.  Nominations and any additional support materials should be sent to the Helen Cohen Outstanding Student Award Committee, GSLIS (gslisnominations@dom.edu), Dominican University, by Monday, March 31, 2008 by 9:00 a.m.

How will the selection be made?
The Committee is comprised of the Chair, Steven Herb; T. Kanti Srikantaiah and Michael Leonard, GSLIS faculty. The committee will review nominations and invite nominees to provide a self-statement and any support materials demonstrating their merit. The Committee will also consider academic records, especially in the event of choosing between two highly qualified candidates.
